Made without a separate inner lining, either throughout a shoe or in a specified part of it.
A lining is the inner layer of the upper. A fully lined shoe may have a quarter lining around the back, a vamp lining inside the forepart and toe, and a sock lining over the insole. An unlined shoe leaves out some or all of these.
Crockett & Jones says its unlined construction increases flexibility, breathability and comfort, chooses leathers with the substance to hold up to years of wear, and presents unlined styles for the warmer months. Its style guide says chukka boots are usually considered unlined, and that loafers are commonly made both lined and unlined. Unlined is not the same as unstructured: Crockett & Jones describes its unstructured collection as a further refinement of its unlined construction, still Goodyear welted, with flexi-welts and lightweight ribbing.
