Luxury Lexicon A definition

Toe box

The part of a shoe that encloses the toes.

The toe box is the front of the shoe around the toes. Its room and shape come from the last, which Paraboot says defines the toe, whether square, round or pointed. Shoemakers describe lasts by it: Grenson’s 201G last has a rounded toe with a roomy toe box in a G width, and Loake’s 3625 last fits more generously because of its wide, round toe box.

Inside, a stiffener holds the shape. Grenson’s toe puff is a reinforcement placed between the outer leather and the lining so that the shoe retains its shape, and Paraboot pairs the hard toe with the heel counter. The toe box is also distinct from the cap, which Grenson defines as a piece of the upper pattern that sits over the toe, as on a cap-toe shoe.

The toe box comes up in production and fit work. Shoemaking production operators apply toe puffs as part of lasting, and fitting models and technical design roles judge fit and comfort on prototypes and samples. See current footwear fit roles.
