Luxury Lexicon A definition

Savoir-faire

Practical knowledge and skill developed through experience, especially in making or doing something.

In French, savoir-faire is the easy command of an art, a discipline or a profession: manual or intellectual skill acquired through experience and apprenticeship in a defined field. English has moved elsewhere: the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary defines savoir faire as the ability to behave appropriately in social situations. The luxury trade uses the French sense.

Used exactly, it names particular skills that are learned and passed on. The Ministry of Culture’s inventory of haute couture classes it under the UNESCO domain “les savoir-faire liés à l’artisanat traditionnel” and describes ateliers whose artisans master the savoir-faire of the fashion métiers d’art. Because the word means skill in a defined field, it is not a synonym for quality or luxury: an exact use can say whose skill it is, and in which trade.

Savoir-faire often appears in boutique and beauty advisor roles, which ask advisors to learn a house’s savoir-faire and share it with clients, and in roles that teach it, from lecturing to preparing retail training. Press and editorial roles treat it as a subject to communicate. See current savoir-faire roles.
