A shoe with a distinct cap section over the toe, usually formed by an additional piece of upper material.
A cap toe has a separate piece of leather stitched over the front of the vamp. Barker notes that the style takes its name from this technique, an additional piece of leather stitched over the toe, and Loake describes its toe caps as straight. Tricker’s lists the ways the cap can be finished: lined with two narrow rows of stitching, punched with perforations along the cap stitching for a quarter brogue, punched along the stitching and on the cap itself for a semi-brogue, or given a wingtip for a full brogue.
The cap is independent of the lacing. Crockett & Jones lists toe-cap Oxfords, Derbies, monk straps, Derby boots and chukkas. Barker calls the cap-toe Oxford a business staple. A shoe with no cap at all has a plain toe, and a cap whose edges sweep back along the sides of the shoe is a wingtip.
