Luxury Lexicon A definition

Brand ambassador

A person who represents a house to the public: a sales title at counters and boutiques, or someone paid to promote the house.

The phrase has two senses. In marketing, it names someone a house pays or otherwise rewards to promote it, for example on social media. In retail, it is a job title for someone who presents and sells a house’s products. O*NET, the US Department of Labor’s occupational database, lists it among reported titles for demonstrators and product promoters, who demonstrate merchandise to create interest in buying and sell what they promote.

The senses meet on social media. In the United States, Federal Trade Commission guidance says anyone endorsing a brand should disclose a financial, employment, personal or family relationship with it, free or discounted products included. The FTC calls a bare “#ambassador” ambiguous, prefers a tag that names the brand, and says employees who mention their employer’s products, where allowed, should disclose the relationship.

In job listings

As a title, the phrase mostly names a sales role at a fragrance, beauty or fashion house, on a department store counter or in a boutique, with sales targets and consultations. In wines, an ambassador teaches a house’s portfolio and works with sommeliers and chefs. Elsewhere, acting as a brand ambassador is a duty in watch advisor and boutique manager listings.
