Biodegradable


Materials that decompose naturally.

The word is built from the Greek bios, life, and the Latin gradus, a step — degradation being a walking-down, a descent by stages. It describes a process performed by living organisms: bacteria and fungi break a material into water, carbon dioxide or methane, mineral salts and new biomass. It is not a property a material simply possesses. It is something that happens to a material, under conditions, over time.

Conditional by Definition

This is the qualification that most claims omit. A cloth that returns to soil in twelve weeks in an industrial composter at fifty-eight degrees may sit intact in a landfill for decades, where there is no oxygen and little microbial activity. The same fibre in seawater behaves differently again. A responsible statement therefore names three things: the environment, the timeframe, and the standard against which it was tested. European and British regulators have moved firmly against unqualified environmental claims in recent years, and vague labelling now carries real commercial risk.

The Trim Problem

Even where the fibre is genuinely sound, the garment rarely is. A wool coat may be biodegradable and its sewing thread polyester; the interfacing fused; the zip nylon on a metal tape; the dye or water-repellent finish sufficient to inhibit the microbes doing the work. Elastane blended into a cotton jersey at five per cent is enough to disqualify the whole cloth. Designing for the end of a garment’s life means resolving every component, which is slower and more expensive than resolving the main fabric — and it is the part most collections skip.

The result is that material specialists, compliance officers and technical designers now sit in conversations that were once purely aesthetic. Knowing precisely what a term like this does and does not warrant is, increasingly, part of the job.
