Luxury Lexicon A definition

Atelier

French for a workshop or studio, including a workroom where garments, accessories or other objects are made.

In French, an atelier is a workshop: an artisan’s premises, or the part of a business where goods are made and repaired, as distinct from its offices and warehouses. By extension it also means the people who work there. English has kept mainly the narrower sense of a room or building where an artist works, a studio.

In a couture house the line between studio and atelier matters. The French Ministry of Culture’s inventory of haute couture, written by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, describes the creative director and the studio drawing the designs and the ateliers making them. The ateliers divide into flou, for soft dresses and blouses, and tailleur, for structured jackets, coats and trousers. A première d’atelier runs each one and directs the premières mains, who make the pieces. The word alone does not say what is made or how.

In job listings

Atelier appears in workshop manager titles at jewelry and fashion houses, in product development roles that work between design and the internal atelier, and in sample-making roles that ask for experience gained in one. It also turns up in a boutique role’s title, so read the duties: the word does not always mean production work. See current atelier roles.
