Luxury Lexicon A definition

Angleur

A specialist who bevels and polishes the edges of watch movement components.

An angleur, or angleuse, bevels and polishes the edges of movement parts, the technique called anglage. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie counts hand anglage as a métier d’art and notes that it is now often done by CNC machines. At the bench, the angleur roughs out each bevel with a file, evens it with abrasive sticks of decreasing grit, polishes it with a boxwood peg and diamond paste, and checks every pass under a loupe. The measure is consistency: A. Lange & Söhne describes its finishers producing bevels of uniform width and angle on virtually every edge of a movement.

The title alone does not say how much is done by hand. In semi-industrial work an angleur may guide an abrasive wheel on a hand tool, controlling pressure and inclination, with final polishing still done by hand.

In job listings

Angleur appears as a job title in movement finishing and decoration workshops, sometimes combined with finishing decorator. Such listings may ask for hand anglage and chamfering, polishing, self-inspection of finished parts, and apprenticeship training in horology or hand finishing. It is a production role at the bench. See current angleur roles.
