RIMOWA seeks a Working Student – Prototype Technician in Cologne, Germany for hands-on hardside component prototyping and design mock-up fabrication.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Execute and deliver hardside component prototypes under guidance of the Workshop Manager, ensuring alignment with project specifications for Development and Innovation initiatives
  • Analyze prototype requests in collaboration with requesters and Workshop Manager to define and validate both physical and digital deliverables
  • Assist with planning and organizing prototyping activities, including resource allocation (materials, equipment, personnel), project timelines, and priorities using CAD knowledge (Rhino, Solidworks)
  • Source and procure prototype materials and deliverables, ensuring timely execution according to validated project plans
  • Provide technical support on functional concepts, material selection, and construction methodologies
  • Fabricate physical prototypes using cutting, sanding, lacquering, 3D printing, rapid prototyping technologies, and assembly of design mock-ups and hardside components
  • Contribute innovative ideas and solutions to enhance prototype quality and facilitate informed decision-making in hardside component development
  • Support Workshop Manager in daily operational organization of the workshop, adhering to established processes and procedures
  • Maintain clear and efficient communication with Workshop Manager and prototype requesters regarding all prototyping activities

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a student in Product Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, or related field with active working student status
  • 1–3+ years of hands-on experience in prototyping, model making, or workshop fabrication, preferably in product design or industrial settings (student-level experience accepted)
  • Proficiency in CAD software, particularly SolidWorks and Rhino, with ability to read and interpret technical drawings and design specifications
  • Practical expertise in fabrication techniques including 3D printing and traditional handcrafting; CNC machining and vacuum forming highly desirable
  • Deep knowledge of material properties and selection across plastics, metals, composites, and woods
  • Demonstrated safety-first mindset with knowledge of workshop safety regulations and best practices
  • Fluent English proficiency (mandatory); German language skills highly valued

Experience

Currently enrolled in a degree program in Product Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Active working student status required.

Compensation

The base compensation for this position is EUR 14 per hour.
