RIMOWA in Cologne seeks a Model Maker (Working Student) — part‑time temporary role supporting hardside prototyping for Product Development.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Execute and deliver hardside component prototypes under the guidance of the Workshop Manager, ensuring alignment with project briefs for Product Development and Innovation initiatives.
  • Analyze prototype requests and collaborate with requesters and the Workshop Manager to define and validate physical and digital deliverables.
  • Plan and organise prototyping activities, including defining materials, equipment and personnel needs; apply CAD knowledge (Rhino, SolidWorks) to task planning.
  • Source and procure prototype components and external services to meet validated timelines and specifications.
  • Fabricate physical prototypes and design mock‑ups using techniques such as cutting, sanding, lacquering, 3D printing and assembly; support CNC machining and vacuum forming where required.
  • Support technical and functional concept development, advising on material selection and construction methodologies.
  • Maintain daily workshop operations in line with established processes and safety regulations; communicate status and required inputs proactively with stakeholders.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and propose efficiency improvements to accelerate decision‑making in hardside component development.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Product/Industrial Design, Engineering or a closely related field (working‑student status required).
  • 1–3+ years of hands‑on experience in prototyping, model making or workshop fabrication; student‑level experience accepted, with a minimum of 3 years preferred.
  • Practical expertise in additive manufacturing and traditional modelmaking techniques; experience with CNC machining and vacuum forming is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of materials (plastics, metals, composites, woods) and their behaviour in prototyping contexts.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, CAD models and detailed design specifications.
  • Knowledge of workshop safety regulations and a safety‑first approach to fabrication.
  • Fluent English (required); conversational or fluent German is a plus.
