Maison Margiela seeks an Assistant Store Manager in New York to lead commercial performance, client development, team capability, visual presentation, and store operations, supporting the Store Manager and assuming full leadership in their absence. The role offers a salaried, exempt position with an annual salary range of $75,000–$80,000.
Role & Responsibilities
- Understand and support the business strategy and the store’s sales and financial targets.
- Support the Store Manager in developing the store strategy and annual action plan, contributing insights on team capability, traffic patterns, and product performance.
- Track and communicate store sales and KPIs to the team daily, explaining results and actions needed to close performance gaps.
- Review business and product reports daily and weekly, surfacing trends and recommended actions to the Store Manager.
- Monitor controllable expenses, escalate variances to the Store Manager, participate in monthly profit and loss reviews, and help execute resulting action plans.
- Partner with the Store Manager on recruitment, including sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding store associates.
- Contribute to team development and performance management through day-to-day coaching and documented feedback, in partnership with the Store Manager.
- Foster an engaging and inspiring environment for learning that enables employees to realize their potential.
- Deliver training so team members are competent in their responsibilities and aligned with store business objectives; train the team on company policies and procedures as directed.
- Assess individual strengths and development areas and share findings with the Store Manager to inform development plans.
- Train and coach the team to meet customer service standards and deliver an excellent customer experience.
- Ensure staff are trained in POS transaction handling and cash management procedures.
- Execute and follow up on the clientele program, coaching sales professionals to develop and retain long-term clients.
- Maintain consistently high clienteling standards on the selling floor and support growth of the customer database through daily data capture and follow-up.
- Ensure CRM is executed in accordance with company standards.
- Resolve customer issues on the floor within established guidelines and escalate matters beyond that scope to the Store Manager.
- Manage daily store operations, including logistics, stock flow, inventory control, and floor readiness, partnering with the team to maintain full operational readiness.
- Apply Home Office store operations policies and procedures to maximize efficiency and protect business integrity.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-maintained store that supports efficient operations and a comfortable shopping experience.
- Ensure accurate POS transactions, cash handling, and banking procedures; adhere to banking and accounting policies and complete opening and closing procedures to standard.
- Prepare and maintain store schedules for Store Manager review and approval, using company scheduling tools to plan productive coverage aligned with business potential.
- Monitor floor coverage and adjust in real time to meet traffic and service demands.
- Work within store headcount and payroll budgets, flagging risks to the Store Manager before they affect the period.
- Execute merchandise standards in line with company direction and the Store Manager’s priorities.
- Monitor best-seller and slow-seller performance on the floor and report commercial needs to the Store Manager.
- Partner with the visual associate to manage merchandising in a way that maximizes sales.
- Implement visual standards and guidelines, including criteria and quantities, and maintain product and display presentations to standard.
- Assume responsibility for store operations, team leadership, and business results in the Store Manager’s absence.
- Make decisions within defined authority limits and promptly escalate matters beyond that authority.
- Provide the Store Manager with a clear handover of business results, team matters, and outstanding issues upon their return.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience in retail management or a related role.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Experience in retail, luxury retail, or a service-oriented organization preferred.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, and early or late shifts as needed.
- A previous client book preferred.
- Financial management experience.
