Chanel seeks a Customs Compliance Specialist in Piscataway, NJ to manage import/export compliance, customs filings and trade classification.
Role & Responsibilities
- Ensure full compliance with U.S. and international customs, import/export and trade control regulations across Chanel’s U.S. operations.
- Classify goods under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and determine correct duty rates, valuation and origin for all imports and exports.
- Prepare, review and file customs entries and export declarations; manage submissions through ACE/AES and other electronic filing systems.
- Serve as primary liaison with customs brokers, freight forwarders and carriers to resolve clearance issues and optimize cross-border processes.
- Maintain and audit import/export documentation, bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists and certificates of origin to support Customs audits and inquiries.
- Monitor changes in trade law, free trade agreements, sanctions lists and export controls (EAR/ITAR); update internal processes and advise stakeholders on impact.
- Support internal and external customs audits and remedial action plans; implement corrective measures and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with supply chain, logistics, legal, procurement and finance teams to ensure accurate invoicing, landed-cost calculation and customs compliance.
- Develop and deliver training and written procedures for operations teams and external partners on customs requirements and best practices.
- Track and report KPIs related to clearance times, duty savings, audit findings and compliance performance to senior management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Business, Law or related discipline preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, valuation, origin rules and Incoterms.
- Practical experience with U.S. customs processes and electronic filing systems (ACE/AES); familiarity with export controls and sanctions screening.
- Proven ability to manage customs brokers, freight forwarders and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to documentation accuracy and regulatory detail.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to present complex regulatory issues clearly to business partners.

Experience
Typically 3–5 years of progressive customs/trade compliance experience, ideally within fashion, luxury goods, retail or a global import/export environment; hands-on experience managing customs entries, HS classification and customs audits is expected.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Business, Law or a related field preferred.
