Chandon seeks Lab Technician in Yountville, California. Conduct wine analysis, manage laboratory equipment, ensure quality standards in premium winemaking.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine analyses of musts and wines, including collection of tank and barrel samples using established protocols
  • Calibrate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment including pH meters, autotitrators, turbidimeters, alcolyzer/DMA5000, and Y15 instruments
  • Monitor tank fermentations during harvest, identify anomalies, and communicate findings to the winemaking team
  • Conduct microbiological assessments including microscopy, yeast and bacteria culture monitoring
  • Perform sanitation and quality control checks of tanks, production lines, and bottling equipment
  • Prepare and execute trials and evaluations including tastings, dosage trials, SO2 adjustments, and cork sensory assessments
  • Accurately perform production bottling line startup procedures and manage secondary fermentation checks with comprehensive record-keeping
  • Process grape maturity samples and recognize out-of-range wine analysis results
  • Calibrate compact dosage groups to ensure accurate liqueur additions and precise dosing for sparkling wine disgorging
  • Record, retrieve, and manage analytical results using winemaking software (Innovint); prepare work orders for SO2 additions
  • Assist in training seasonal laboratory staff
  • Maintain laboratory workspace in a clean, organized, and safe manner; ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals per safety regulations
  • Review and contribute suggestions for optimization of existing work instructions and laboratory procedures
  • Demonstrate proficiency in mathematical calculations required for laboratory operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Enology, Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of professional laboratory experience, preferably in winemaking or food and beverage processing
  • Lab internship at an accredited university or winery and/or 2 years of documented laboratory experience
  • Proficiency with laboratory software systems, particularly winemaking analysis platforms such as Innovint
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical handling, hazardous materials protocols, and personal protective equipment (PPE) procedures
  • Strong proficiency in laboratory mathematics and statistical analysis
  • Understanding of enological principles and wine chemistry

Experience

Minimum 3 years of professional laboratory experience, with preference for practical experience in winemaking, food processing, or beverage production environments. Lab internship at an accredited university or winery combined with foundational laboratory work experience is acceptable.

Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Enology, Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related scientific discipline is preferred. Practical or professional experience in a food or beverage processing laboratory may be considered as an alternative to formal education.
