About Burberry

Burberry Limited, a quintessentially British luxury fashion house, is renowned for its innovative designs and commitment to quality. As part of the global luxury conglomerate, Burberry offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment where creativity and excellence are at the forefront. The company is dedicated to fostering a culture that encourages diversity and sustainability, making it a leader in the luxury industry.

Burberry is recruiting three Senior Engineering Managers across Commerce, Content and Fulfilment to lead engineering delivery across one or more digital product scrums. The role sets technical standards, oversees engineering teams and vendors, and drives quality, security and continuous improvement; it requires attendance at the Central London office four days a week.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across assigned scrums, setting and enforcing development standards, code quality expectations, and engineering best practices for permanent and third-party engineering resources.
  • Provide robust engineering estimates and capacity assessments to the Product Manager to support prioritisation and trade-off decisions; maintain a clear view of what is achievable in each sprint and planning horizon, and flag risks to commitments early.
  • Contribute to demand shaping and backlog refinement with the Product Manager and Solution Architect, assessing technical feasibility, complexity, and risks so backlog items are realistic and understood before sprint delivery.
  • Own the engineering approach for delivering domain backlog items, making day-to-day implementation decisions within solution architecture guardrails and taking accountability for quality, maintainability, and technical debt.
  • Oversee engineering delivery across the domain, ensuring sprint commitments are achievable, technical dependencies are managed, and delivery pace is sustained.
  • Manage and challenge third-party partners within the scrums, scrutinising estimates, technical approaches, and output quality to ensure value from delivery partners.
  • Own relationships with technology solution vendors in the domain, ensuring service and technical performance, roadmap alignment, and agreed service expectations; lead regular vendor performance reviews and QBRs with Product, Delivery, Architecture, Procurement, and relevant business stakeholders; oversee contract renewals, extensions, and material commercial changes, ensuring these are identified and progressed promptly.
  • Work with solution architects to translate technical designs into deliverable engineering plans and ensure implementation follows agreed architectural patterns and enterprise guardrails.
  • Coordinate engineers and delivery roles across scrums, allocating skills and capacity to backlog priorities and escalating resourcing gaps to the Senior Delivery Manager.
  • Own the technical quality of scrum output, overseeing code reviews, testing coverage, release readiness, and production stability.
  • Contribute technical input to agile ceremonies across assigned scrums, including sprint planning and backlog refinement; ensure engineering readiness for committed work, present outputs in sprint reviews, and drive engineering improvements through retrospectives.
  • Take accountability for production support and incident resolution within the domain, ensuring prompt responses, root-cause identification, and delivery of fixes; minimise business impact and feed lessons learned into engineering practices.
  • Identify and drive engineering innovation and improvement in line with the Tech Forward Digital Strategy, including automation, reusable components, shift-left testing, platform simplification, and emerging technologies such as AI and agentic capabilities to accelerate delivery, reduce cost, or enhance the digital product.
  • Partner with the Security function to establish secure coding practices and manage adherence to agreed security standards.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in an engineering leadership, technical lead, or lead developer role within a technology delivery environment.
  • Strong technical depth across relevant technology stacks, with the ability to scrutinise partner engineering output and challenge estimates credibly.
  • Experience managing mixed engineering teams of permanent staff and third-party delivery partners.
  • Comfort with hands-on technical oversight as well as people and delivery leadership responsibilities.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain technical complexity clearly to product and delivery stakeholders.
  • A proactive approach to driving engineering standards, quality practices, and continuous improvement across scrums.
  • Familiarity with modern development practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and agile delivery.
  • Experience with one or more of Burberry's core platform technologies, such as SAP, Salesforce, Contentstack, Databricks, or integration middleware, is preferred.
