Breuninger seeks an Engineering Lead to combine hands-on software engineering with team leadership, guiding delivery, technical quality and team development in a complex engineering environment. The full-time role is based in Stuttgart, with remote work possible.
Role & Responsibilities
- Provide embedded leadership within the team, fostering trust, clarity and accountability so it can deliver high-quality software sustainably at a predictable pace.
- Combine engineering expertise with people leadership, strengthen collaborative ways of working and remain willing to contribute directly to development.
- Partner with the Product Owner to take responsibility for delivery, direction and quality; maintain focus, reduce context switching, continuously improve processes and time to market, and develop technical standards and architecture sustainably.
- Strengthen team autonomy through clear decision-making boundaries, encourage ownership and accelerate team decisions while maintaining alignment with other teams and business objectives.
- Support team members’ interests and development, strengthen engagement, create opportunities for growth and encourage accountability.
- Coach engineers in their development, take responsibility for performance and hiring, and work closely with Agile Coaches, Staff Engineers and Heads of Engineering to continuously develop the engineering organisation.
Qualifications
- Prior leadership experience and intrinsic motivation to develop colleagues personally and technically, with the ability to shift between context-dependent roles.
- Ability to recognise and shape team dynamics, listen actively, identify and resolve tensions constructively, and foster an open feedback and learning-from-failure culture.
- Several years of hands-on software engineering experience in complex system landscapes, ideally with Kotlin, Java and Spring Boot.
- Strong software architecture knowledge, particularly Domain-Driven Design, with experience applying it in production environments and establishing technical standards and advancing architecture decisions in previous roles.
- Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS), containerisation (Kubernetes), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience with databases such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL and their use in production environments.
- Openness to AI-supported engineering practices; practical experience in this area is an advantage.
- Clear, solution-oriented and purposeful communication, including on difficult topics; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and provide transparency around business-relevant decisions.
- A collaborative approach to software engineering, with the ability to advocate for technical positions while remaining open and flexible to other perspectives.
- Very good German skills at C1 level or higher.
