The Engineering Lead is an embedded team leader who builds trust, clarity and accountability while guiding sustainable delivery of high-quality software. The role combines hands-on engineering with responsibility for delivery, architecture, team development, performance and hiring, in close partnership with the Product Owner and engineering peers. Full-time; remote work is possible.
Role & Responsibilities
- Build trust, clarity and accountability within the team, creating an environment where high-quality software can be delivered sustainably at a predictable pace.
- Combine engineering work with leadership responsibilities, foster collaboration and contribute directly to development when appropriate.
- Partner with the Product Owner to take responsibility for delivery, direction and quality; maintain focus, reduce context switching, improve processes and time to market, and sustainably evolve technical standards and architectures.
- Strengthen team autonomy through clear decision-making boundaries, promote ownership and accelerate decisions while ensuring alignment with other teams and business objectives.
- Support team members’ interests and development, strengthen engagement, create opportunities for growth and encourage accountability.
- Coach engineers in their development; take responsibility for performance and hiring; and collaborate closely with Agile Coaches, Staff Engineers and Heads of Engineering to continuously develop the engineering organization.
Qualifications
- Leadership experience and intrinsic motivation to develop colleagues personally and technically, with the ability to move fluidly between context-dependent roles.
- Ability to recognize and shape team dynamics, listen actively, identify and constructively resolve tensions, and foster an open feedback and learning-from-mistakes culture.
- Several years of hands-on software engineering experience in complex system landscapes, ideally with Kotlin, Java and Spring Boot.
- In-depth software architecture knowledge, particularly Domain-driven Design, with experience applying it in production environments and establishing technical standards and actively advancing architecture decisions in previous roles.
- Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS), containerization (Kubernetes), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience with databases such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL, including their use in production environments.
- Openness to AI-supported engineering practices; practical experience in this area is an advantage.
- Clear, solution-oriented and focused communication, including on difficult topics; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and provide transparency around business-relevant decisions.
- Team-oriented approach to software engineering, with the ability to advocate for professional positions while remaining open and flexible to other views.
- Very good German language skills, at least at C1 level.
