Breuninger is seeking an Engineering Lead in Düsseldorf to guide a software team, partner with the Product Owner on delivery, direction and quality, and help evolve technical standards and architecture. The role includes hands-on engineering, coaching, performance and hiring responsibilities, and close collaboration across the engineering organization; it is full-time, with remote work possible.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Build a trusting team environment that enables sustainable delivery of high-quality software at a predictable pace.
  • Combine engineering with leadership, foster collaboration, and remain willing to contribute directly to development.
  • Partner with the Product Owner to take responsibility for delivery, direction, and quality; maintain focus, reduce context switching, improve processes and time to market, and develop technical standards and architectures sustainably.
  • Strengthen team autonomy through clear decision-making boundaries, encourage ownership, accelerate team decisions, and ensure alignment with other teams and business objectives.
  • Support team members’ interests and development, strengthen engagement, create opportunities for growth, and foster accountability.
  • Coach engineers in their development; take responsibility for performance and hiring; and work closely with Agile Coaches, Staff Engineers, and Heads of Engineering to develop the engineering organization continuously.

Qualifications

  • Previous leadership experience and intrinsic motivation to develop colleagues personally and technically, with the ability to shift between context-dependent roles.
  • Ability to recognize and shape team dynamics, listen actively, identify and resolve tensions constructively, and foster an open feedback and learning-from-mistakes culture.
  • Several years of practical software engineering experience in complex system landscapes, ideally with Kotlin, Java, and Spring Boot.
  • Sound software architecture knowledge, particularly Domain-driven Design, with experience applying it in production environments and establishing technical standards and advancing architecture decisions in previous roles.
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS), containerization (Kubernetes), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Experience with databases such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL and their use in production environments.
  • Openness to AI-assisted engineering practices; practical experience in this area is preferred.
  • Clear, solution-oriented, and purposeful communication, including on challenging topics; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and provide transparency on business-relevant decisions.
  • A team-oriented approach to software engineering, with the ability to advocate for professional positions while remaining open and flexible to other perspectives.
  • Very good German language skills, at least C1 level.
