The Materials Innovation and Development Engineer identifies, develops, qualifies, and industrialises innovative materials and processes, translating creative intentions into distinctive product solutions. The role leads cross-functional innovation projects from feasibility through product integration, collaborating with Creative, Marketing, Product Development, Methods, Quality, and Production teams.
Role & Responsibilities
- Monitor innovations in composites, metals and alloys, ceramics, and hybrid materials.
- Identify technologies and manufacturing processes that offer novel aesthetic or functional properties.
- Explore innovative surface treatments, textures, colours, and finishes.
- Develop and maintain a network of suppliers, laboratories, research centres, and start-ups.
- Work with Creative and Marketing teams to understand and translate aesthetic, sensory, and functional expectations.
- Propose materials and processes that enable new appearances, colours, textures, and finishes.
- Produce or oversee samples and demonstrators to inform creative development.
- Lead material development projects from feasibility study through technical validation.
- Design and coordinate tests, prototypes, and characterisation campaigns.
- Assess physicochemical, mechanical, and aesthetic properties.
- Evaluate resistance to wear, scratches, corrosion, and ageing.
- Support the integration of materials into collections with Product Development, Methods, Quality, and Production teams.
- Identify constraints related to processing, assembly, and finishing.
- Contribute to defining and optimising manufacturing processes.
- Assess costs, technical risks, and industrial deployment opportunities.
- Lead multiple innovation projects from initial concept through product integration.
- Build schedules, coordinate contributors, and monitor budgets.
- Document and present results to Creative, Marketing, and Development teams.
- Contribute to protecting and enhancing innovations, particularly through intellectual property.
Qualifications
- Bac+5, an engineering degree, or a master's degree in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, ceramics, composites, or an equivalent field.
- Experience in jewellery, watchmaking, or luxury is an advantage.
- Candidates from other demanding sectors, including high-end automotive, aerospace, and advanced materials, are also considered.
- Expertise in at least one materials family: composites, metals and alloys, or technical ceramics; sound knowledge of the others.
- Understanding of material production, processing, and finishing methods.
- Proficiency in characterisation methods and qualification testing.
- Professional-level English.
- Scientific and technological curiosity, aesthetic sensibility, and an interest in luxury.
- Creativity, initiative, autonomy, and pragmatism.
- Scientific rigour, results orientation, and the ability to bring projects to completion.
