The Director of Engineering leads the care, performance, and long-term preservation of Mount Nelson’s physical assets, overseeing engineering operations, preventive maintenance, utilities, sustainability initiatives, and capital projects. The role ensures safe, efficient hotel operations and collaborates with hotel leadership and operational teams to support the guest experience and the property’s long-term value.
Role & Responsibilities
- Lead the Engineering function and maintain the hotel, facilities, plant and equipment to five-star standards, prioritizing preventive maintenance and operational reliability.
- Protect and enhance physical assets through proactive asset management, lifecycle planning, and identification of future maintenance and investment needs.
- Lead capital projects and refurbishments, delivering them on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to guests.
- Ensure engineering operations meet health, safety, statutory, and life-safety requirements; advance sustainability through improved energy, water, and resource efficiency.
- Manage departmental financial performance, including operating budgets, engineering expenditure, service contracts, utilities, and capital requirements; identify efficiency improvements without compromising quality.
- Lead and develop the Engineering team, fostering accountability, technical excellence, and collaboration with operational departments to support the guest experience.
Qualifications
- Relevant engineering or technical qualification.
- Significant experience in engineering or facilities management, ideally in a five-star hotel or luxury hospitality environment.
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing an Engineering team.
- Strong technical knowledge of building services, preventive maintenance, critical plant, and asset management, with experience delivering capital projects.
- Strong commercial acumen and experience managing budgets, utilities, service contracts, and capital expenditure.
- Sound knowledge of health and safety, statutory compliance, life-safety requirements, and sustainable engineering practices.
- Proactive, solutions-focused leadership combining technical expertise with an understanding of luxury hospitality, excellent attention to detail, and commitment to an exceptional guest experience.
