The Dior Bar jacket

A waist, a shoulder and a considerable argument about proportion. Dior builds a silhouette.

Look at the space just below the waist. The Bar jacket makes something of it. The body narrows, then the basques open out; the shape has direction even on a mannequin. I find that confidence absorbing. A jacket can alter the apparent architecture of a person without acquiring a single conspicuous ornament.

Dior places the Bar suit at the heart of its first collection in 1947. The house still returns to the jacket’s proportions. That continuity matters more than treating every later version as an exact replica. Fabric, fastening and the wearer each change the result. Set it beside Le Smoking: two persuasive ways of giving a jacket authority, with rather different ideas about the waist.

Paris is part of this story, but the shape is learned at closer range. A good tailor sees where the cloth must yield and where it must hold. The little Lady Dior makes a related argument in leather. Some houses can be recognized by what they ask a material to do.
