From across a room, intrecciato is a pattern. Up close, it becomes a sequence of decisions: one strip crossing another, the surface turning a corner, the weave meeting an edge. That change of scale is what holds my attention. Intrecciato belongs in this collection because its construction supplies its signature. The act of making has become the identity. Remove a label and there is still an entire language in the leather.
A name for the work
Bottega Veneta introduced intrecciato in 1975. In the house’s account of the technique, strips of leather are interwoven entirely by hand, with the skill passed between generations of artisans.
It is easy to start using the word as though it names a bag. It names a way of making one. The distinction leaves room for very different proportions, handles, openings and uses beneath the same recognizable surface.
That is an unusually productive signature for a leather-goods house. The Gucci Horsebit makes its mark with a piece of hardware; intrecciato lets the whole surface do that work. Someone looking closely can follow the thing that makes the object recognizable into the thing that makes it an object at all.
Follow a strip
I would begin a closer look at the edge. The broad woven panel supplies the first impression, but the corners and attachments make us think about how it was assembled. A handle has to meet the body; an opening has to finish somewhere. The work does not stop at the photogenic part.
Two examples placed together reveal more than a string of adjectives. The scale of the weave, the flexibility of the leather and the weight of the bag may differ considerably. A soft bag changes again when it carries something. The studio photograph has had the easier assignment.
There is no need to assign an impressive number of hours to the work unless the house gives one for that particular model. The crossing strips are evidence we can inspect. “It takes a very long time” is a much less interesting conversation.
What happens after the counter
A client advisor has to bring those observations into an ordinary day. What fits? How does the closure feel? Is the handle comfortable with a coat? A bag can be wonderfully considered and still be the wrong bag for a particular routine.
The leather’s care instructions belong in that conversation, too. As with the Hermès Birkin, leather-goods roles continues beyond the finished object, into fitting, care and repair. Different materials do not acquire marks, soften or respond to water in one universal way. A clear route to the house’s service department is more reassuring than an expansive promise about durability.
For people working in Bottega Veneta’s boutiques and workshops, intrecciato gives a shared subject to the maker and the person presenting the finished piece. Follow a strip through the weave, and there is already quite a lot to say.
